What is it Like to Attend The CUNY College of Staten Island
What is it Like to Attend The CUNY College of Staten Island The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Maria graduated from The CUNY (City University of New York) College of Staten Island in 2012 with a degree in History. She is currently New York City tutor specializing in Phonics tutoring, Spanish tutoring, World History tutoring, and more. See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Maria: The campus is set off of Victory Boulevard, which is one of the main streets in Staten Island. Therefore, there are many options to use public transportation from different areas of all five boroughs and a short drive from the NY/NJ border. There are two entrances into the college. There is the main entrance on Victory Boulevard, and the south entrance which is easily accessible by public transportation. A student can also ride their bike into campus, and secure it near the library. There are express buses that drive to the entrance of the college, a FREE shuttle that picks up students from the Staten Island Ferry and drops them off inside of the campus, an internal bus service within the campus grounds, and a bus that comes from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The campus is extremely safe with many public safety officers in almost every building, especially in the Campus Center, the administration buildings, and the library. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Maria: Professors, academic advisors, and teaching assistants are readily available in person, with or without an appointment, and most conveniently by email. Most professors are available before and after class for any questions regarding course material and assignments. Advisors are available anytime throughout the year, and are extremely knowledgeable. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Maria: Dorms will make their grand debut beginning this coming fall semester (2013), therefore, I have no direct experience concerning dorm life. However, the establishment is going to be very spacious with suites that contain even up to 4 bedrooms. There are many opportunities for socialization, with two cafes and a restaurant available on campus. There are also many student activities such as clubs, a radio station on campus, student leadership development programs, study-abroad opportunities, and many other opportunities to travel the country and the world. The campus is smoke-free, eco-friendly, and even has a garden, a college newspaper and a journal. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Maria: I obtained a Bachelor's Degree in History, in which The College of Staten Island did a great job in supporting my academic career. I received academic advisement and counseling throughout the year, and many advisors and professors were readily available. The college has many programs from Associates Degree to Doctoral programs. They are well-known for their Education, Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Social Work, Accounting, History, Philosophy, Astronomy, African Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Nursing, and Media-Communications departments. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Maria: It was extremely easy for my to make friends my freshman year in college. Students are extremely approachable and your best tools to socialize are clubs and Greek Life on campus. Greek Life is active on campus. They even have clubs. They also participate in charity work and other fundraisers. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Maria: The Career Center is extremely helpful and helped me find a work-study program that best suited my needs and interests. There are also many employment opportunities available through the college such as the Teaching Scholars program, work-study program, and Liberty Partnership. The college also hires students as tutors. Many reputable companies from city jobs and other highly-recognized organizations recruit from job fairs which are held on campus. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Maria: The library, Campus Center, Green Dolphin Lounge, and Sleeping Dolphin Lounge are each unique in their own ways. The library has floors designated for different sound levels. The first floor is designated for normal socializing, all the way to the fourth floor, which is completely silent and regulated by public safety officers. The Campus Center is where all the clubs meet, and where Student Life offices and conference rooms are located. The Sleeping Dolphin Lounge is designated for those who need a power nap before, in between, or after classes, and the Green Dolphin Lounge provides refreshments, a spacious sitting area with tables and couches, along with a mini-cafe that is open when movies are being shown. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Maria: There is a mall, various shopping centers, and diverse restaurants located near the college. There are also bowling alleys, a public library, and Manhattan is about 30 minutes away via public transportation. New Jersey is also a ten-minute car ride away from the college. The Jersey Shore is about 30-45 minutes away (by car) from campus. In the surrounding area, there are also buses that ride to Atlantic City (casinos, boardwalk, etc.). VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Maria: The student body is made up of a few thousand students, taking classes throughout the day. As of right now, they are all commuter students, however, I do not know what their prospective student population will be once they open their dorms. Class sizes vary from 10 students in a class, to 150-200 students in a class. Class sizes vary depending on the academic level of the course, and if it is a lecture or not. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Maria: Every experience has been pleasant except for one. But the experience I loved the most was with my senior thesis professor who guided me and was an immense help when I was writing my final thesis. She helped me acquire resources and helped me in the beginning. She gave me the advice and confidence to help myself be able to complete my 35-page thesis at the end of the semester with confidence and efficiency. Check out Marias tutoring profile. The other factor which affects these rankings is, of course, the languages UK citizens choose to learn as a second language.Modern European languages such as French, Portuguese and Spanish come above Italian, implying that fewer people learn Italian as a second language. This is largely due to the lack of opportunity to learn Italian in UK schools, however, there is an advantage to the rarity of Italian speakers in the UK.Although, as the old saying goes, âeverybody speaks Englishâ, speaking foreign languages such as Italian is a real asset in the world of work. Because of this resistance training method, youâll be able to have a defined set of exercises in advance that can make for an interesting, interval training style workout routine. Before moving on to the next series of moves, you will have a rest interval. One main concern, whatever your gend er, is working on having a strong butt â" one that can only be accomplished with physical activity. Luckily, circuit training is one of the ways you can accomplish this while losing weight and adapting it to your level. This method doesnât just help with losing weight in specific areas but typically involves upper body and lower body workouts.Circuit training is also a great way to work your heart health through cardiovascular exercise and improve endurance and stamina. Cardiovascular exercises are those that cause you to breathe heavily and is normally is characterized by total body movement. In fact, circuit training depends a lot on your respiratory system and your cardio abilities. Any athlete working with circuit training will be able to see the benefits on their heart and lungs through the weight training involved. In sum, circuit training requires little equipment, such as a kettlebell, dumbbell, barbell or medicine ball and can be adapted to all levels. Each workout shoul d include body workouts that work your full body and muscle groups. Some of the muscles you can expect to work are your biceps, triceps, glutes as well as muscles in your abdominal and leg region.Circuit training shouldnât be confused with HIIT, which stands for high intensity interval training. While HIIT workouts are very similar to circuit training sessions, including using classic moves like squats and push ups, circuit training actually requires each move to be completed consecutively and without a rest break between them.Other Great Methods Besides CrossFit and Cross trainingCircuit training isnât the only exercise program you can utilize if youâre training in sports â" there are other methods you might want to check out, depending on your ultimate goal. Some examples, like CrossFit or cross training, can be equally as effective in providing training exercises for weight loss and for improving general, total body performance.CrossFit is a body workout that is derived fr om the CrossFit Inc. society and involves toning muscles, gymnastics, cardio training and more. Each day, a CrossFit athlete will have a WOD or workout of the day, defined for them in advance.Finding maps online that display gyms officially affiliated with CrossFit is a great way of finding a gym that is in your price range as well as willing to be adaptable to whatever sports level. The CrossFit method depends on discipline and intensity.CrossFit is different from circuit training in a number of aspects:Both can use materials like weights, but CrossFit tends to utilize heavier weightsCircuit training is centred around cardiovascular health while CrossFit centres around muscle gainCircuit training can be adapted specifically to womenCircuit training focuses on being a fat loss program that functions on working all parts of the body equallyOn the other hand, both training methods are very similar in many aspects, like the aspect of rest intervals. In both methods, this rest time tend s to be very short. Whether youâre at the gym with a personal trainer or simply workout out at home, both methods will leave you sweating with your heart pounding. Another similarity they share is the fact that both have a diverse range of body areas they focus on. You can combine high intensity cardio with your circuit routineCross Training is another training method you might be interested in to burn calories or body fat, which gets its name from the other two types but actually doesnât have a lot to do with the two. Actually, cross training is generally used in sports played at the professional level and consists of training in a sport that is distinct to the one youâre already doing in order to reinforce different skills. This method allows an athlete to work on muscles other than the ones typically worked in the sport they specialize in. If youâre currently not training in a sport at a higher level, this method is probably not of interest.Optimize Your Muscle Gain with the Power CircuitIn order to work on specific areas of the body, athletes often turn to classic exercises and machines they can use that involves lifting weights. Weightlifting is one of the most classic methods of training that is characterized by completing the liftin g movement and then pausing between each rep of lifting. As you can see, this kind of workout is area-specific: arms, abdominal or legs â" weightlifting allows you to train and build muscle in an efficient way. Comparing this to circuit training, instead of getting a general workout that works the whole body, classic weightlifting works specific body parts and is therefore very efficient in building muscle.Check for a personal trainer near me here. This, however, doesnât mean that circuit training and weightlifting are incompatible as training workouts. Weightlifting exercises can be integrated in a circuit workout framework and, going further, also combined with cardio exercise. For example, in order to move from a classic circuit training session, aimed for beginners, to a complex circuit training, aimed at muscular endurance, there exists one method called the power circuit.Circuit training has the advantage of increasing your metabolism, or metabolic rate, which is a result of the structure of the full body workout. After each rep, in which the body has a short recovery time, the body starts to burn fat. Methods such as the power circuit training are defined by fat burning exercises, with the number of reps adjustable to each level. For classic power circuit training, it is advised to complete 30 or 40 reps per move, with around 6 different exercises and 5 overall circuits. This framework isnât static, though, and is meant to be modified according to skill level and the ability for whole-body movement. The efficiency of power circuit training can be traced to the explosive movements: each movement should be strategic and powerful in order for you to get meaningful results. Again, circuit training is based on time and not on the number of repetitions â" something that applies to power circuit training as well.Itâs also advised to alternate movements in order for variation in the areas you are working. College Students Split On ADHD Prescription Stimulants Abuse
College Students Split On ADHD Prescription Stimulants Abuse Photo Credit: gwhatchet.com The results show that while students are aware of the risks of misusing, they can understand why some students may decide to misuse, especially due to the pressures on students in todays college environments. CPAMMs survey was done online from May 15 to June 11, 2014 and 2,056 adult college students in the U.S. who were enrolled in a 4-year college or university and going to some in-person classes were participants. The purpose of the study was so CPAMM could better advise and develop an educational strategy to aid in preventing the non-medical use of ADHD prescription stimulants. According to the survey, college students think that taking ADHD prescription stimulant medications that werent prescribed to them would be unethical (75 percent), a form of cheating if used to help with schoolwork (59 percent), extremely harmful (73 percent), and a big deal (80 percent) if someone who doesnt have ADHD uses the medication. Of those surveyed, 65 percent compared students misusing ADHD prescription stimulants for academic purposes to athletes using performance-enhancing drugs. While it seems that that most college students view the misuse of ADHD prescription stimulants as wrong, 24 percent of students thought it was okay for someone who didnt have a prescription for the ADHD drugs to use them to help with school. Meanwhile, 48 percent believed students who misused ADHD prescription stimulants are only doing whats necessary to keep up with the demands and pressures of college. Photo Credit: hometestingblog.testcountry.com Additionally, 42 percent of students wrongly thought that using unprescribed ADHD prescription stimulants is not any more harmful than an energy drink or strong coffee. Most participants also thought that the main reasons students start misusing ADHD medicine are a determination to get good grades (70 percent) and pressure to succeed (68 percent). A belief that the majority of participants expressed was that other students are using ADHD prescription stimulants not prescribed to them, though a 2013 survey reported a rate of 9.3 percent of college students using prescription stimulants for non-medical purposes. âThe misconception that âeverybody is doing itâ and that misusing will somehow guarantee better grades is something that CPAMM hopes to challenge by creating peer-to-peer interventions for use by college students,â said Ann Quinn-Zobeck, Senior Director of the BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA, a CPAMM partner. The study also identified that those more likely to misuse ADHD prescription stimulants are members of Greek fraternities and sororities and athletes, and they are also more likely to think using ADHD medicine will help them achieve better grades. CPAMM plans to study medical professionals to recognize primary-care based policies to help decrease ADHD prescription stimulants misuse, abuse and redirection. Throughout 2014-2015, CPAMM will also run focus groups among college students and administrators to try to better understand how the college environment influences the misuse of ADHD medication and what kind of preventative efforts would work best. âThe survey shines a light on the stress permeating the lives of students on todayâs college campuses. We want to communicate as a Coalition that there are better, healthier ways to cope,â said John MacPhee, Executive Director and CEO of The Jed Foundation, a CPAMM partner.
Ho ho huh Merry Christmas!
Ho ho huh Merry Christmas! Ho ho .. oh? Well, Christmas is coming at break neck speed. Are you ready! Im not. I can give you one suggestion; do not watch the news reports of the masses in the shopping malls crazy for the fifty percent off weed whackers, or trying to get a parking spot that could cost you your life. Never mind Target, Macys is so busy the handicap placards are going for top dollar over there. And donât forget the extra wrapping paper and the decorations to replace the ones the dog chewed up yesterday. OK, maybe it isnât all that bad but thatâs how it looks to me. Iâm always busy judging everybody knocking themselves out to meet the Christmas expectations and specifications. Ho ho ho! Hey who you calling a ⦠alright Iâll stop right there. But once again I want to know; why is everyone going mad on December 25th? Christmas! I get it; Iâm not a Druid you know (at least I donât think so?). But how come Christmas is celebrated on different dates in different countries? And how come everyone has so many different traditions. My research found some answers and created a few more questions, but here are a couple of tid-bits for Christmas in America. Did you know that ⦠Each year, 35 million Christmas trees are sold in the United States. There are approximately 21,000 Christmas tree growers in the United States, and it takes about 15 years to grow a Christmas tree thatâs ready to be sold. The Christmas tree idea really started in Germany. In fact in 1846 queen Victoria and her German prince, Albert was shown in a newspaper sketch standing with their children next to a Christmas tree. Of course that was all that was needed for the British and The East coast well to do Americans to get into the tree thing. Today, in the Greek and Russian orthodox churches, Christmas is celebrated 13 days after the 25th, which is also referred to as the Epiphany or Three Kings Day. This is the day it is believed that the three wise men finally found Jesus in the manger. In the Middle Ages, Christmas celebrations were rowdy and raucousâ"a lot like todays Mardi Gras parties. The churches and the rich put a stop to that. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston, and law-breakers were fined five shillings. The first eggnog made in the United States was consumed in Captain John Smiths 1607 Jamestown settlement. Poinsettia plants are named after Joel R. Poinsett, an American minister to Mexico, who brought the red-and-green plant from Mexico to America in 1828. The Salvation Army has been sending Santa Claus-clad donation collectors into the streets since the 1890s. The Red Santa outfit he wears today came from a Coke commercial. Rudolph, the most famous reindeer of all, was the product of Robert L. Mays imagination in 1939. The copywriter wrote a poem about the reindeer to help lure customers into the Montgomery Ward department store. So Christmas in America has been more of an evolution of many combined ancient holidayâs and foreign cultures and money. Who knew? Ho ho ho! Merry Christmas?
